In this new series, Knight paints a makeshift misfit kingdom that revolves around the narrative of a romantic secret society. Drawing from personal histories of rural escapism through imagination, Knight paints disenchanted youths who long for the drama and grandeur of the old world dynasties. His mythical and ambiguous characters are bucolic outcasts - shamed, bullied, tragic and beautiful, they transcend the tedium of small town life for the protection of the enchanted forest, banding together to form an exclusive and rustic regality. However, like any alliance, even within secret societies, roles are cemented, hierarchies are born, corruption erodes, and tragedies contort what was once deemed utopic.Inspired by the writing of Antonia Fraser, Sandra Gulland and Maurice Sendak, Knight's paintings of a fictitious misfit kingdom subtly play with notions of 17^th and 18^th century European court culture, drawing especially the Bourbon and Habsburg dynasties, two of the most exclusive, sexual, inbred, and consequently tragic alliances ever to rule.

Kris Knight spent his youth in six small towns in rural Ontario before moving to Toronto where he currently lives and works. A portrait painter foremost, Knight's mythical and often ominous works examine performance in relation to the construction, portrayal and boundaries of sexual and asexual identities. Since graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2003, Knight's practice has concentrated on thematic figurative works that are often as attractive as they are disturbing. Knight started exhibiting with Katharine Mulherin in 2005. In the past six years he has exhibited nationally and internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions and international art fairs. His work is included in public and private collections, most notably The Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection, The Oppenheimer Collection, The Agnes Etherington Museum of Kingston, The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, and 21c Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. Recent exhibitions include "A Deadly Nightshade" at Spinello Gallery in Miami, "The Reflexive Self" at Mike Weiss Gallery in New York, Zona Maco in Mexico City, and a feature at this year's ArtParis. Recent press has included the Miami New Times, Miami's Sun Post, Xtra Magazine, Pref Magazine and Toronto Life. Knight is represented by Katharine Mulherin Contemporary in Toronto and Mulherin Pollard in New York.

Like neo-hippie nudists lost on LSD or maybe wicked woodland sprites, there are a bunch of naked teens frolicking through a nocturnal netherworld of forests, fields, and black-water ponds. The boys are hairless and pretty. The girls are similarly sexy but worldlier. Everyone wears a floral crown and a hard, wet-eyed look of wonder. It could be psychedelics, or it could be ethereal knowledge. But no one’s talking.

The new group of oil paintings by Toronto-based artist Kris Knight, “A Deadly Nightshade,” wanders through that interdimensional space between fact and fiction, dreams and nightmares, this world and the next. Snatching from French symbolism and Sturm und Drang, Knight’s ten canvases at Spinello Gallery depict mini-narratives in the brightly burning lives of misfit friends. They skinny-dip at midnight and hold secret ceremonies in caves. They live out there under cover of darkness.

Mike Weiss Gallery is pleased to announce the group exhibition Reflexive Self, which will open on Thursday June 24th, 2010.

The “reflexive self” is a view of self in the context of the people and situations around us. The show is comprised of five international artists of varying techniques whose depictions of other and object explores the concept of self-reference and introspection in painting.

Canadian artist Kim Dorland’s thickly sculpted trees bear the marks of his own suburban adolescence and his teenage accomplices in debauchery. The cacophony of the scrawled graffiti causes the viewer to yearn for another look at childhood as Dorland’s playful impasto chunks seem to be the remnants of what’s left behind of youth. For Dorland, the development of self is a process involving the symbols, words, and gestures acquired from the society in which a person lives.

The daft young world of Berlin-based Stefanie Gutheil is densely laid onto the canvas with thick globs of “paint sausages” straight from the tube. Her monsters and creatures are a dizzy and imaginative recollection and caricature of her recent artist residency in Miami, of the wild parties and people she rubbed shoulders with. Exuberant as the artist’s imagination, her frenetic energy is captured and felt on the canvas.

While Stefanie’s realities become another exaggerated world, Kris Knight explores another dimension completely. Giving a safe haven to the rural misfits in his portraits, Knight draws upon personal stories and shifts the boundaries of self-definition. His bohemian and imaginative alter-egos attempt to transcend the tedium of small town life for the enigmatic depths of an enchanted forest. The chilled features of the face, red-nosed and bright-eyed, are an elusive depiction of the Canadian artist himself. Like the lost boys of Neverland, these familiar and empathetic characters are taken away to somewhere new.

The Dead Dads Club Corporation subverts fine art media, taking kids’ Crayola brand crayons to the surface of the paper to create disturbing but attractive scenes of death decaying. The Dead Dad’s Club relies on a fuck-you attitude and litany of self referential information to inform their practice and technique. In order to achieve their goal of being the best Crayola painters out there, they had to make sure they were the onlyCrayola painters out there. If self reflection is a continuous sociological process that takes place through interaction with others by examining the world around us, then the DDCC removes themselves from the social structure by liberating themselves from the rules.

Marc Seguin, in recognition of his own reverence for the progenitors of abstract art, has defaced the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler with abstract expressionistic marks, a manifestation of the very concept that Hitler attempted to eradicate. Concurrent with their 1937 exhibition of “true German art,” the Nazis mounted an exhibition of abstract art, calling it “Degenerate Art” and explaining that it is the work of “fools, liars or criminals who belong in insane asylums or prisons.” Hitler seems to peer through the paint, annoyed that his legacy has been challenged. It’s quite curious to consider what we all might have become in his “true” vision, and what we are today because of its failure. Seguin sees himself as a product of the eventual failure of Hitler to destroy the human spirit for expression and creativity in art.

Spinello Gallery is proud to present the much-anticipated solo exhibition of Kris Knight "A Deadly Nightshade." The exhibition features a suite of oil painting. This will be Knight's second solo exhibition with Spinello Gallery.

In "A Deadly Nightshade," the forests of Canadian portrait painter Kris Knight are enchanted at night. A safe haven for rural misfits, Knight's latest paintings revolve around a narrative of a romantic secret society. Drawing upon personal stories, his luminous characters depict an alchemy of the imagination, attempting to transcend the tedium of small town life for the enigmatic depths of a nocturnal forest.

The young men and women that Knight paints are known for their dichotomies, and a Deadly Nightshade makes no exception of this. Notions of bohemia are skewed with tragedy, lush nature is laced with toxic blossoms, and pristine bathing ponds are both enticing as they are treacherous. Knight's paintings reference Symbolist and Romantic paintings, as well as 18th Century French portraiture, but also draw upon contemporary notions of androgyny, the postmodern gaze and the preservation/decay of youth.
